What do you think of up-scalling your anime sources from like 480p or lower to 720p? Of course the question is not only limited to these resolutions, and I want to know if you think editors should upscale their anime or not, and if yes, how would you go about it?

Here's what i think
If you are to edit a specific anime and let's say it has some openings or some of its episodes are 480p, but not all of them, then i guess it is justified
Now if you have an anime that is entirely 480p or below 720p then im against it! I think upscaling the footage wont make the video better by itself and therefore i find it unecessary and it makes me believe that the person who did it, did it just for the sake of 720p quality and to attract more viewers.

You also asked how we would go about it and to that i answer i dont really know but i think i have heard the best way of doing it is with avisynth scripts or something like that.

Since quite frequently i need to create a project using different sources (not amv related) i tend to render everything on 720 or 1080p and in .mp4 ... It is trouble-free (when you don't alter the aspect-ratio) and it will give you greater compatibility with future projects/implementing on different platforms.

Just switch the project to 1080 or 720p and let there be black bars in every corner :p I thinks it's better if I am the one to get a 4:3 640p video into 16:9 720p rather than youtube...

I guess that makes sense in one way or another, but for me it doesn't work for 2 reasons. 1- video players of sites like amv.org and amvnews play the video with its original aspect ratio, so youtube's faulty player can be overlooked, and 2- when embedding the youtube link into a forum like ours, it actually plays the video with its aspect ratio as well, and you check my Crowtime vid thread.

I think what footage is dominant in your amv deserves the according quality render, unless the 480p footage looks really bad if you render 720p if you zoom a lot etc.

If you know how to do it the right way , upscaling a footage from 480p to 720p for youtube use is ok.
Even if you know how to do it , upscaling for a contest will lose you points.
Upscaling is considered ok when an anime has old episodes (480p) while the new ones are (720p) exp. one piece
And last thing. If you decide to upscale , dont mess up the aspect ratio.
